7th Annual Richard Smith Memorial Basketball Tournament

Updated On: Mar 08, 2010 (08:29:00)

7th Annual Richard Smith Memorial Basketball Tournament

The Mckinney Firefighters Association is proud to announce that the annual basketball tournament is scheduled for April 24th, 2010 at Old Settler’s Park, in McKinney Texas.  This is the same location as last year and is located at 1201 East Louisiana, McKinney Texas, 75069.  This is an annual 5 on 5 basketball tournament comprised of area fire department teams, and benefits our fallen brother’s family.  Richard Smith was a Driver/Operator with the MFD who passed away in late 2008, after serious injuries sustained during a fall from a roof while off duty.  We are committed to fully funding the education expenses for   his two children to attend college.

The tournament will be limited to the first 8 teams who pay the entry fee.  We are limiting the number of teams to eight so that we can keep the tournament a one day event and get finished at a reasonable time.  The entry fee this year will be $300 per team.  This is an increase over last year, but each player will receive a commemorative t-shirt.  The maximum number of players per team will be 15.

The tournament will begin at 0930 and we usually wrap up around 1800.  The bracket will be set after all teams have registered. Consideration on start times will be given to teams with long travel times.  In other words, the closest teams will most likely get the early start times.

We have had great feedback from last year’s tournament and plan on making this one even better.  Be sure to bring the wife, kids, girlfriend or whoever else you have.  Downtown McKinney has plenty of great places to eat and shop, and there are playgrounds for the kids within walking distance.  The McTown Klown will also be making an appearance.

We have had a lot of interest in this year’s tournament, and playing last year does not automatically hold your spot for this year.  So get your money in early!  Please be sure to include the number of players on your roster, and their T shirt size, so that we can make sure to have everyone’s T shirt.  Once you mail in your registration fee, you can email me the number of players and shirt sizes.

The rules will be the same as last year and I have included a copy of them below.  If you have any questions, I can be contacted at jwhitus@mckinneytexas.org.

Remit Payment to:

            McKinney Firefighter’s Association

            Attn: Chris Mayzner

            PO Box 2754

  2. Game time is Forfeit Time.  No Exceptions.  Teams are expected on the floor at the designated time. Teams must have five players to begin a game.
  3. Teams must have matching jerseys with a number displayed on the back.
  4. All players must have their number listed (printed) on the score sheet prior to the start of the game. No names may be added after the game has started. Team scorebooks may be used.
  5. Team captains are accountable for all players listed on the score sheet. If a question should arise and  proof of Fire Department employment is not available, the game will be played but will be a forfeit. Player may not be able to play if in violation.
  6. Teams are responsible for any damages to the facilities and equipment that are caused by them. Any damages to the facilities and/or equipment, or misconduct deemed inappropriate by the Event Director will result in ejection from the event.  There will be absolutely no refunds or awards given to any team ejected.
  7. Coaches and teams are expected to check in at least 15 minutes before their first scheduled game. Coaches are advised to check the master schedule and compare to the schedule you have before your first game.

 Games:

  1. McKinney Fire Department Rules – Will apply except for the following:

All games will be two (18) minute running halves with the clock stopping the last two (2) minutes of each half.  The clock will not stop in the second half if a twenty points or greater margin exists. Teams will be given two (2) thirty (30) second time-outs per half. Time-outs cannot be carried over at any time. Teams will be given a maximum of two (2) minutes for half time. First team listed is the guest team.

Any team leading by twenty (20) points will not be allowed to press. This includes half court traps as well as full court presses. Teams will be warned once and if they are continuing to press they will be given a technical foul.

Overtime:  A two (2) minute running clock with the clock stopping for only the last thirty (30) seconds will make up the first overtime period. If a second overtime is needed, it will be sudden death overtime (first team to score in any manner wins).

Fouls:

Each team member will be allowed a total of 7 personal fouls per game, including any overtime periods.  When a player commits his 7th foul, he will foul out, and not be allowed to play for the remainder of the game.

Each team will be allowed 10 team fouls per half, at which time the opposing team will get to shoot 1 and 1 free throws.  When the team fouls reach 15, the opposing team will shoot two free throws and retain possession of the ball.

 General:

  1. By accepting admission into this event, each and every participant accepts responsibility for all injuries and indemnifies the host, event workers, host facilities and all others who have put this event on for your pleasure.
  2. The event Director reserves the right of final decision pertaining to any action committed by a player, coach or fan.  The Director also reserves the right to change/modify any of the rules above. This will be done in the best interest of the players not the coach or fans.
  3. POOR SPORTSMANSHIP WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!  This is a charitable tournament and we expect COACHES, PLAYERS and FANS to be on their best behavior. Violators will be asked to leave the facilities.
